NAME             Writing for Children

FACULTY: LAURA GONZALEZ

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course gives students the necessary tools to write stories for children that adults also enjoy reading. Through the study of familiar folktales, students will be able to identify and apply different techniques in their own writing, while keeping an eye on the dynamics and elements that spark the imagination of both the adult reader and the child. Our objective is to create new work by exploring the traditional boundaries of storytelling for children.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this course is to learn to write for children from zero to 100 +? years of age.

Students may write in different genres: poetry, stories, illustrated stories, rhymes, riddles, fables, and so forth. At the end of the course, students will know the basic techniques to attract readers—both children, who will learn to appreciate reading from a young age, and adults, who will remember when they were children.

METHODOLOGY

Students will receive six lessons, posted to their online classroom, every two weeks. Each lesson will be accompanied by readings that illustrate theory. Students will study theory and texts presented as examples as well as work on their own writing.

During the course, students will receive information and feedback to improve their work.

Students will deliver their assigned homework via e-mail every two weeks according to the class schedule. The instructor will review students’ work carefully, and comments will be posted to the online classroom.

REQUIREMENTS

Like everything in life, one learns to write by writing … and by reading, of course
